SCUF Gaming™
Valor Companion App — Precision, Certified
Overview
SCUF Gaming™ is the benchmark for premium, pro-grade esports controllers. I joined the digital team as the UI/UX Designer responsible for the SCUF Valor Companion App, the software layer that lets players fine-tune paddles, remap buttons, and manage trigger stops with competition-level precision. Beyond the interface itself, I owned the app's path to release — driving it through accessibility, usability, and project quality certification.
The Challenge: Precision Without Friction
SCUF controllers are built for players who compete on margins of milliseconds — paddle configurations, trigger-stop depth, and per-profile button mapping all have to be adjustable without slowing anyone down. The interface also had to meet a formal bar: it needed to pass accessibility certification and usability sign-off, not just look competition-ready.
Design & Certification Process
My role covered the full product lifecycle, from the first wireframe to final sign-off:
Architecture & Wireframing: I mapped the core flows — paddle assignment, trigger-stop calibration, profile switching — so competitive players could make changes mid-session without breaking focus.
Visual Identity: I built a high-fidelity system aligned to SCUF's pro-esports DNA: matte, high-contrast dark UI with clear state feedback, designed to feel serious and precise rather than decorative.
Accessibility Certification: I audited every screen against WCAG 2.1 AA — contrast ratios, focus order, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader labeling — and drove the fixes needed to take the app through formal accessibility certification.
Usability Validation: I ran structured usability testing with real controller users, iterated on the flows that caused hesitation or errors, and carried the app through usability sign-off.
Quality Assurance: I worked directly with QA to define acceptance criteria for every screen and interaction, and closed the loop on project quality certification ahead of release.
Key Features Delivered
Paddle & Button Remapping: A precise, low-friction interface for assigning paddles and rebinding controls per game.
Trigger-Stop Customization: Fine-grained control over trigger travel, built for split-second reliability.
Profile Management: Save and switch between configurations across titles and genres without breaking flow.
Accessible by Design: An interface that meets formal accessibility standards without compromising the competitive, high-density feel players expect.
The Outcome
The Valor Companion App shipped as a certified, competition-ready extension of SCUF's hardware — accessible, usability-tested, and QA-approved. By treating certification as a design constraint rather than an afterthought, the result is an app that serious players can trust under pressure, and that meets the accessibility bar every player deserves.
